McLaren MP4/5
Description
The McLaren MP4/5 was built from a Tameo Kits 1/43 scale kit representing Alain Prost’s #2 car from the 1989 Brazilian Grand Prix.
Tameo Kits produced both Brazilian Grand Prix and San Marino Grand Prix versions of the MP4/5. For this project, I chose the Brazilian Grand Prix specification.
As with several of my Formula One builds, I replaced the headrest and mirrors with custom-designed 3D-printed parts to better reproduce the shapes seen on the actual car.
At the 1989 Brazilian Grand Prix, Prost qualified fifth and finished second in the opening race of the season. He went on to win the 1989 Formula One Drivers’ Championship.
This was also the fifth Marlboro-liveried Formula One car I had built. Working on several cars with the same distinctive red and white color scheme gave me an opportunity to further develop the painting process used for this livery.
