Benetton B186 Detroit GP
Description
The Benetton B186 Detroit Grand Prix version was built alongside the Mexico Grand Prix version as a two-car project.
Although both models are based on the same Benetton B186, the Detroit GP specification features several differences from the Mexico GP version. Reproducing these variations was one of the main points of this build.
One area that required particular attention was the tire sidewalls. The kit reproduces the tire markings with decals, but I felt that the markings appeared too clean when applied as supplied. I therefore added subtle weathering to the sidewalls to give the tires a more natural appearance and better integrate them with the overall finish of the model.
Gerhard Berger drove the #20 Benetton B186 at the 1986 Detroit Grand Prix, qualifying 12th before retiring from the race after eight laps. Later that season, he drove the B186 to victory at the Mexican Grand Prix.
Built alongside the Mexico GP version, this model provided an opportunity to reproduce the specification differences between two appearances of the same car during the 1986 season.
